Charles Djou’s Victory Opens New Door

Republican Charles Djou has breached the Democrats bastion by winning the special election in Hawaii’s First Congressional District – the Honolulu district where President Obama grew up. Djou became only the third Republican to win from Hawaii. Charles Djou’s victory in the heavily Democratic district is seen as a welcome political reversal for the GOP. In 2008, Obama won from here securing 70 percent of the vote, and no Republican had come from Hawaii in the last 20 years.

The victory also snapped a winning streak for Democrats, who had emerged victorious in seven consecutive special elections for Congress. The Democrats havd won two races in upstate New York and one in Pennsylvania. Source

American Idol raises almost 45 million

Sir Elton John, Alicia Keys and Carrie Underwood were among the stars who performed in Wednesday’s live special event organized by the producers of top-rated singing contest “American Idol.”

Two previous editions of “Idol Gives Back” in 2007 and 2008 raised a total of around $140 million from audience and corporate donations.

Some 18.3 million Americans watched Wednesday’s show on Fox television, which was scaled down partly because of the U.S. economic recession, and expectations were lower. The $45 million is expected to rise when proceeds from iTunes sales are added, Fox said. Continue reading

Sarah Palin’s SNL ProblemWith the TV world waiting to see if the Alaskan governor pops up on tonight’s Saturday Night Live special, one new study says that when Tina Fey does Palin, the Alaskan governor’s favorability rating drops.

The poll, conducted yesterday by a research company and a college-based public-opinion institute, asked 314 people how they felt about Palin after watching an SNL sketch spoofing the consonant-dropping vice presidential hopeful. Continue reading
